What Is a Dental Implant?

Crafted from high-quality titanium, dental implants are artificial tooth roots that bond naturally with your jaw. Dental implants mimic the structure of a healthy tooth root and can anchor many types of restorations. Due to their resilience and range of uses, they are an increasingly popular solution to missing teeth.

Our Meticulous Dental Implant Process

3d illustraion of Fredericksburg dental implant and restorationWe begin your dental implant treatment in Fredericksburg by conducting an in-office consultation with our friendly prosthodontist. We want to provide you with all the information you need to decide whether this is the proper treatment for you. Our team performs a comprehensive dental examination during your free follow-up visit to ensure that you're in good health and are an ideal candidate for the procedure. If you're suffering from gum disease or another dental condition, it's essential to treat your symptoms before implementing the implant placement.

We take detailed images of your smile, so we can map out exactly where your implants must be located for lasting results. Our prosthodontist explains your diagnosis and outlines your personalized treatment plan, so you know exactly what to expect in the weeks to follow. After we determine your ideal course of treatment, your implants will be placed by a trusted oral surgeon. Our front office is happy to help you schedule your surgery.

Once your implants are placed, it's crucial to allow your mouth to fully heal from the surgery. We communicate with your surgeon to ensure your recovery is going smoothly and are available to provide prompt assistance if you suffer a setback. Typically, the recovery period takes between eight and twelve weeks. After your mouth has fully healed, you'll return to our practice to have your custom-fitted restoration attached to the implant post.

What if My Jawbone Can't Stabilize Dental Implants?

If you don't have sufficient bone density to undergo a dental implant treatment, our Fredericksburg prosthodontist will recommend a bone graft or sinus lift. A bone graft is a surgical procedure that enhances the density of your jawbone. A sinus lift is a specific form of bone graft that strengthens the upper jaw. If we believe that a bone graft or sinus lift would help you achieve your desired results, we'll refer you to an experienced oral surgeon to explore your options in greater detail.

Our Implant Restoration Options

Whether you're looking to replace a single tooth or an entire arch, we have an appropriate implant-supported restoration. Our prosthodontist discusses your options in detail and helps you choose the treatment that best matches your aesthetic goals and health needs. We offer:

Implant Crowns: Implant crowns are used to replace a single missing tooth. They attach directly to your implant post and subtly blend into your natural smile.

Implant-Supported Bridges: If you are missing more than one tooth, an implant-supported bridge smoothly fills the gap with natural-looking restorations. Your implants firmly secure your replacement teeth, and they keep your healthy teeth from moving out of alignment as time passes.

Implant-Supported Dentures:  Implant-supported dentures use your implant posts to provide the foundation for an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. Each arch consists of 10-14 teeth, allowing our team to shape a beautiful and functional smile. Depending on your unique needs, your replacement teeth may need to be anchored by between four and six implants. Since your replacement teeth are firmly secured to your implants, they won't slip or loosen when you eat and speak.

All-on-4® All-on-4 refers to a specific treatment whereby your prosthetics are secured by four strategically placed implants. This option is particularly effective if you're missing all of the teeth in your lower or upper arch.

If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of waiting several weeks for your permanent dentures to be placed, you may be an ideal candidate for immediate dentures. A temporary set of prosthetics will be attached to your implant posts on the day of your surgery, so you can leave our office with a fully functional smile. After several months, your immediate dentures get replaced by your permanent restoration. If you have any questions about our restoration options, please get in touch and we'll happily address them!
